D2 Software, a subsidiary of Digital Domain, is now shipping v.4.5 of its compositing system Nuke. New features include an image-based keyer and more flexible 3D workspace, as well as a new interface, support for Mac OS X and a new pricing structure.
The image-based keyer lets Nuke artists work on each color channel individually, a much more flexible way to work than traditional keying methods that proportionally adjust all channels when another is adjusted. The keyer also includes specialized tools for matte edges and fringes- so long, halo.
Built for new and older users alike, version 4.5 features a familiar "traditional" mode and a newer mode that lets users create their own default settings and use the new control panel bin to manage windows and dialog boxes the way they do in most other desktop software programs. OS X and OpenFX support means you can also access a vast array of third-party plug-ins. $4,995 (software license; annual maintenance, $999 per year). Additional render nodes, $745/seat; annual maintenance, $149. Upgrade from v.4.5, free. www.d2software.com
