KODAK has released Version 2 of Look Manager System and introduced version 4 of Display Manager 4.

KODAK has released Version 2 of Look Manager System and introduced version 4 of Display Manager 4.
Look Manager System Version 2
KODAK Look Manager System Version 2.0 enables cinematographers to
previsualize, create, communicate and manage subtle nuances in film looks from
preproduction through postproduction.
"We designed this system to provide a practical way for cinematographers to
communicate their intentions for 'looks' to everyone involved in the workflow
during postproduction," says Kim Snyder, general manager, Worldwide Image
Origination Products, and vice president for Kodak's Entertainment Imaging.
"It enables cinematographers to experiment with looks using a calibrated
system, ensuring that everyone sees the same images. This new version offers a
number of improved features and more functionality."
KODAK Look Manager Version 2.0 includes a user-friendly interface with an
enhanced project-oriented approach. Cinematographers can now import and
organize images on a per scene or per date basis, assign metadata and basic
looks that can then be further color-corrected, viewed and compared on
calibrated monitors with other system users. This assists in the communication
of the entire vision of a project with collaborators. The new screen view also
provides a larger area for imagery and the ability to work with multiple
images simultaneously.
Additionally, for the first time, 3-D look up tables (LUTs) can be applied
to images and exported, giving post facilities a scientific reference and
communications component to eliminate guesswork involved with recreating
visuals as intended by the creator. Snyder notes that this feature embeds
important visual information utilizing KODAK color science, resulting in more
accurate dailies throughout the workflow.
The new version also features more intuitive functions, including multi-
level undo/redo and set/reset utilities, and extended drag and drop
capabilities. Other enhancements include quicker run speeds and a "recipe"
summary of the looks in a tool tip or on a photographic print.
"The improvements in Version 2.0 were developed based upon feedback from a
wide range of filmmakers who have been using and testing the product in real-
life production situations," notes Snyder.
KODAK Look Manager System Version 2.0 is compatible with both Mac and
Windows operating systems. It includes KODAK Display Manager System v4.0,
which consists of calibration hardware and proprietary software utilizing
KODAK color science to adjust electronic display devices that accurately
emulate print film.
Display Manager System
Kodak is introducing their latest state-of-
the-art calibration system that enables postproduction facilities to more
efficiently emulate film-looks on electronic display devices. KODAK Display
Manager System V4.0 accurately replicates color and luminance data from the
film recorder and the film print being projected in the theater.
"This system is designed to help assure that directors, cinematographers,
editors and everyone else involved on the creative side of making films have a
consistent visual reference," says Kim Snyder, general manager, Worldwide
Image Origination Products, and vice president for Kodak's Entertainment
Imaging Division. "That's essential because subtleties in colors, contrast and
textures are an important part of the visual grammar of story-telling. With
hybrid filmmaking today, it is crucial to have an accurate and consistent
color management tool."
The advanced system incorporates new features recommended by customers. It
eliminates the need for operators to manually record sensor measurements.
Other new features include enhanced color gamut mapping.
"The automatic calibration feature makes the system more efficient and less
labor intensive," Snyder says. "The picture data displayed on electronic
monitors and with digital projectors is a more precise representation of the
intentions of the filmmakers who created the images."
Futhermore, facility-specific settings can also be saved for reuse,
providing convenient and consistent results.
The number of operating system platforms supported by the software has also
been expanded to include Linux Fedora, Linux Enterprise, and Mac Tiger
operating systems. KDM is also is available for Windows 2000/XP, IRIX 6.5 or
higher, Mac OS 10.2 or higher, and Linux REDHAT 9 platforms.
Kodak introduced Display Manager System in September 2004. It incorporates
proprietary Kodak color science technology and software utilizing custom 3-D
LUTs. The calibration sensor enables CRT, LCD, standard and high definition
monitors and digital projectors to emulate the looks of images recorded on
different Kodak print films.
"Weta Digital recently utilized KDM as the color management tool of choice
for their work on Peter Jackson's KING KONG," Snyder says. "We will continue
to listen to our customers and design the tools they need to tell stories with
the highest quality visuals possible."
KODAK Display Manager is also integrated into both the KODAK Look Manager
System and KODAK VISION2 HD System.
