Even though conventional wisdom says a large-screen HDTV is a man’s toy, it turns out women like it too. Apparently a whole lot!

So much so, in fact, that most women would choose an HDTV set over a wide choice of other goodies, including a new appliance, a day off from work, or-can this be true?-a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes. The only thing women seem to want more than that beautiful HD set is a weekend trip (location unspecified).

This information comes courtesy of Scripps Networks, which recently conducted a lifestyle survey of men and women over 18 years of age seeking trends about HDTV for their HGTV and Food Network channels.

Perhaps one surprise comes in the preferred types of HD programming. More men and women-a total of 72 percent-say their favorite genre of HD programming is documentaries. Dramas and sports come in second at 69 percent, with lifestyle programming bringing up the rear with 62 percent of viewers interested.
So who are the HDTV decision-makers in the home? Scripps reported that 83 percent of men claim they are, while 51 percent of women said HDTV decisions are theirs.
