I caught up with Ted Schilowitz at the Assimilate cocktail party at NAB. He had a few interesting/entertaining stories about the proliferation of Red and its near cult following.

– On the set of The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington with other actors including such notables as Gary Oldman and Tom Waits, and lensed by Don Burgess, they had a car crash scene where a Red camera was set up on a high hat to get a close-up of the car going airborne and flipping. Well the car when further than expected and landed right on top of the Red camera. When they dug the camera out from underneath the wreckage, not only was the camera and footage still intact, but the camera was still running.

– Even Ted with high expectations seemed amazed hearing Steven Soderberg on NPR talking about the Red camera. He also spoke about going on set to a production shooting with the Red camera and receiving a standing ovation.

– “I don’t think people realize how revolutionary the DVS Clipster is” said Schilowitz about the DVS Clipster ability to playback and screen RAW 4K files.

– And last, he was asked to shoot his daughter’s school play at her West Hollywood high school. Of course most of the parents are in the film industry so the interest in the camera almost stole the stage. I joked with Ted that he’d go to any lengths to market the camera, even at his daughters’ elementary school. He seemed to find it amusing. That two-hour recording was the test footage he provided to DVS to see if they could play back 4K without dropping a frame. “I told them to call me if they dropped a frame and they never called.”
