Every now and then a blog post comes along that brings such a smile to my face it’s worth sharing with the world (or those that haven’t seen it or don’t follow the links floating around Twitter). The post is titled How to Be a Director and comes from Joseph Kahn. You might recognize the name: Joseph is one of the more successful music video directors, helming some of MTV’s most popular clips. In addition to music videos he’s had a successful commercial career as well. As for features, Torque has been Kahn’s first and only (thus far) feature film. This Fast and Furious on motorcycles may or may not have been fine cinema, or your cup of tea, but the director is planning to take the feature directing reigns again, this time with what will probably be a smaller, maybe more personal film. From Joseph Kahn’s blog:

I’m currently prepping an independent movie that I am spending my own money on. Hollywood rule number one is to never spend your own money on a project, but if you can’t invest in something you believe in, then burn your money anyway. I’ve been reluctant to make another movie unless a script comes across that I absolutely love, and that script has never surfaced. I think I hate the stories Hollywood wants to tell. They bore the shit out of me.

So as I start my journey, let me help you with yours. I am going to help you aspiring filmmakers by posting advice I wrote a while ago.

With that little introduction, if you have any interest in directing and/or in the person who is the creative force behind feature films then click on over and read How to Be a Director. This post may do more for some aspiring directors than a couple years of film school. Let’s hope Mr. Kahn keeps us all informed with similar filmmaking lessons as he embarks on the journey with his self-funded feature. And we wish him good luck.
