Company Plans to Fast-Track T-CAM 4K for Late 2012

UPDATE 05/25/12: Weisscam tells us the initiative is likely to be funded through Kickstarter, but details are being worked out. In response to the question we asked about guaranteeing that successful funding would lead to the release of a working 4K camera, Weisscam CEO Stefan Weiss agreed that the project isn't without risks, but told us Weisscam is motivated by the same thing that motivates its customers — it wants to use a 4K T-CAM sooner rather than later. "We already have finished two high-end cameras in the past, which are in the market from Hollywood to Bollywood," Weiss said in an email. "We also have two running prototypes of the T-CAM with the 2/3-inch sensor, which we worked on over the last two years. So we don't start from scratch." We''ll share more details as the project develops.

Impressed by the number of requests for a 4K version of its new T-CAM at NAB, Weisscam now says it will attempt to fast-track development of the 4K sensor by asking users to help front the investment capitol.

Without offering details, Weisscam said a "crowdfunding" initiative for the T-CAM 4K will be launched next month with the goal of spurring a camera release by the end of 2012.

"For us, this is a completely new and exciting means of financing," said Weisscam CEO Stefan Weiss in a prepared statement. "If successful, it should mean that we can speed development of the 4K version of T-CAM for release this year."

It's not clear yet how much individual users will be offered to cough up in advance, how exactly the initiative will be administered — through a third party like Kickstarter or directly through Weisscam — and how the company will guarantee that users will see results in exchange for their investment.
