Eyeon Connection Integrates Fusion Compositing Tools with Media Composer and Other Avid Tools

Eyeon Software today started shipping its Eyeon Connection plug-in for Avid 's AVX2 architecture. That means Eyeon Fusion 6.4, which was also released today, and Eyeon Dimension can now be used with Avid's Media Composer, Symphony, NewsCutter, and DS products.

The buzz on Connection, which was was introduced at NAB this year, is that Avid/Eyeon looks like a powerful combo and a realistic alternative to Autodesk's souped-up new Smoke for editors who need high-end nodal compositing capabilities.

Fusion's node-based toolsets are now directly accessible on the Avid timeline via the effects palette, allowing editors to export multilayer clips to Fusion for effects design and then switch back to the Avid, where the clips update as soon as the new footage can be rendered. (If it takes a while, you can continue editing while the clip is updating.) Eyeon also highlighted its stereoscopic tools, noting that optical-flow and disparity-mapping techniques from its Dimension software can come in handy for stereo 3D work.

Other new features in Fusion 6.4 include the new Replicate 3D geometry particle tool as well as direct support for raw footage from the ARRI Alexa, Vision Research Phantom, and Red cameras.
