New DIT Tool Targets DSLRs and GoPro, with Canon EOS and ARRI Alexa to Come

Red Giant today launched the free public beta of its new BulletProof software for DITs and cinematographers. Aimed for now at users of DSLRs and GoPro cameras, the software is designed to offer an organized, efficient workflow to get footage off of memory cards and into your NLE.

BulletProof's functionality is broken down into five views that reflect the typical ingest and logging process. The Import view offloads clips from cards and other media without changing any of the data, and has options for automating multiple back-up copies. The Organize view allows users to look at thumbnails of all of their clips and organize them using folders, playlists, and other metadata. In Review mode, users can scrub through individual clips, selecting in and out points and dropping in markers, and previewing a rough cut to make sure footage matches. The Refine view allows a first, non-destructive color-correction pass with Colorista color wheels and curves and support for LUT application and creation. And the Export view lets users define formats, burn-ins, and other options for their masters, proxies and dailies.

Version 1.0 of BulletProof supports a number of Canon and Nikon DSLRs as well as GoPro's D4 and Hero 3. Red Giant says support for new cameras and codecs will be rolled out in free updates, starting with Canon's EOS Cinema line-up (the 1D C, C100, C300 and C500) and the ARRI Alexa in ProRes mode.

The beta version requires an Intel Mac running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), 10.7.2 and later (Lion), or 10.8 and later (Mountain Lion). Users who agree to torture-test the software during the beta period are asked to post bug reports and feature requests at Red Giant's BulletProof Beta forum. Download the software by following this link. (You'll need to create a free Red Giant ID, if you don't already have one.)

The full version of BulletProof for Mac is expected to ship in "a few months" at a $199 price point. A Windows version is expected to ship at a later date.
