Scaling its Shogun monitor/recorder up to a rackmounted form factor, Atomos announced the Shogun Studio, a new 4K/HD 3RU two-channel recording and playback deck with dual seven-inch 1920×1200 monitors. It's designed for live events, studio shoots, broadcast environments, and on-set monitoring and recording.

The Shogun Studio is being billed as a way to "future proof" workflow for 4K and 60p HD, with support for 30p and 60i HD recording and 10-bit 4:2:2 codecs including Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHR and CinemaDNG.

The Studio is designed to allow both "fast migration to 4K and seamless integration to legacy HD infrastructure," said Atomos CEO and co-founder Jeromy Young in a prepared statement.

HDMI and SDI downconversion from 4K to 2K and HD is built-in, and the dual-channel capability means content can be recorded in two formats and codecs simultaneously, converted and duplicated inside the unit, or played out over HDMI or up to 12G-SDI. Recordings are made to SSD, HDD, or CFast media in the Atomos Master Caddy.

Playback and recording can be scheduled via Ethernet or serial port, as well as on-screen controls. Synchronized dual-channel playout can be set up for video walls, digital signage, and other applications. Options built into the 325 ppi monitors include RGB and vector scopes, 2:1 zoom, focus-peaking and edges-only views, support for eight custom 3D LUTs in .CUBE format (with optional bake-in to recorded clip), and safe-area indicators. The monitors replicate 100 percent of sRGB color space, the company said, and can be calibrated with a Spyder unit. Other features include time lapse, pre-roll caching, and dual redundant power supplies.
