The Revenant is the movie to beat at the 88th annual Oscars, having earned 12 Academy Award nominations, including for best picture. Mad Max: Fury Road was close on its tail with 10 nominations.

Announced this morning, the 2016 Oscar nominations didn't hold any big surprises, although there were a number of small ones. Ridley Scott was left off the directors list in favor of Lenny Abrahamson for RoomBridge of Spies did pretty well, with six nominations, but cinematographer Janusz Kaminski failed to make the cut despite his ASC nomination. And $15 million sci-fi drama Ex Machina outpaced megabudgeted titles including Jurassic World to score a nomination for its VFX.

Anyone hoping that high-profile contenders Straight Outta Compton and Creed might help the Oscars testify to diversity in Hollywood was surely disappointed — while both films had black directors and stars and were represented by single nominations (for original screenplay and supporting actor, respectively), all 20 acting nominees are white for the second year in a row.

The Academy is screening all of the nominated films for members at its Samuel Goldwyn Theater beginning next Saturday, January 23, with other screenings coming up at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood as well as in London, New York, and San Francisco. The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
