New Platform Will Incorporate High-Bandwidth Media Asset Workflow for Live Production

Harmonic has signed an OEM deal with live video system provider EVS under which EVS will employ the Harmonic MediaGrid system to overhaul and streamline its XStore system, unifying three different products into a single offering.

Originally introduced in 2014, XStore is designed as a high-performance nearline storage system for studios, broadcast centers and other facilities. The first installations are expected to include major sporting events in 2018, EVS said. At IBC2017, the in-house IBC TV operation will use the new XStore to produce live content in an early public demonstration of the system, the companies said.

XStore systems start at 28 TB in 6 RU (holding about 500 hours of HD content) and scale up to 500 TB. With Harmonic’s MediaGrid system, the XStore can support ingest, playout, archiving, editing-in-place, transcoding and adaptive bitrate streaming for OTT applications, Harmonic said.

“Combining the capabilities of XStore and the MediaGrid system is a win-win situation for media professionals working in live and near-live production, as it allows them to … scale up or down in capacity instantly and lower storage-related costs,” said Harmonic SVP Corporate Development Shahar Bar in a prepared statement.

“With this new generation of XStore, we’re simplifying our storage offering,” said EVS Product Manager Sebastien Maindiaux in a prepared statement. “We want to more easily deliver customers highly reliable media storage for live and near-live production environments. It’s designed on a grow-as-you-go upgrade basis so it can guarantee flexibility and limit the risk of users not having enough storage capacity to deliver their programming.”

EVS entered the OEM agreement with Harmonic at NAB 2017, EVS said.
