Saville Productions in Venice, CA, said it has signed to represent director John Waters for commercial and branded entertainment.

A legend in American independent filmmaking since he put Baltimore on the map with low-budget cult films including the notorious Pink Flamingos, Waters became a mainstream figure in the 1980s and 1990s with titles like Hairspray and Serial Mom. He can be seen performing live every year when he tours his one-man “John Waters Christmas” show.

“I love the idea of directing commercials because it is the opposite of ‘auteur’ work,” Waters said in a prepared statement. “My name’s not even on the finished product, but if I do a good job the viewer will still suspect I had something to do with it.”

Recent Saville productions have included the Werner Herzog documentary Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World, director Paul Haggis’s short film “Out There” for clothing maker Canada Goose, and Olympics-themed biopic Eddie the Eagle. It’s currently working on a new soccer documentary based on David Goldblatt’s books The Ball Is Round and The Game at the End of the World to coincide with the 2018 World Cup.
