Sony said it has shipped the first wireless mics in the new iteration of its UWP-D series.

Because the new transmitters are about 20% smaller than previous models, Sony said they are a better fit for smaller cameras, including DSLRs and DSLMs as well as compact camcorders.

The UWP-D21 wireless system, which includes the URX-P40 portable receiver and UTX-B40 bodypack transmitter, is available now, Sony said. The UWP-D22, which includes the UTX-M40 handheld wireless mic, and the UWP-D26, which features a UTX-P40 plug-on transmitter, are scheduled to follow in December.

The new UWP-D series wireless systems support Sony’s MI Shoe along with a new digital audio interface. When used in conjunction with compatible Sony XDCAM camcorders (including the PXW-Z280 and the PXW-Z190) and the SMAD-P5 MI Shoe adapter, the new interface can skip A/D and D/A conversions to make direct digital recordings with lower noise, Sony said.
