RED buys Ren Mar Studios in Hollywood

At an event introducing the new Epic sensor, RED executives announced that the company had purchased Ren Mar Studios, on RenMarCahuenga in Hollywood. The name will be changed to RED Studios Hollywood. According to REDuser.net they are keeping their Orange County location and still building the Nevada location. Ren Mar Studios, an historic lot that was formerly Desilu Cahuenga, features five remodeled stages with air conditioning, TV production facilities, production offices with broadband access, rehearsal studios, 24/7 lighting and grip supply shop and 24 hour security. No more information is available from RED at this time as to what they plan for the new RED Studios in Hollywood.

According to the Ren Mar website, productions that shot at the Desilu Cahuenga Studios included I Love Lucy, The Jack Benny Show, I Spy, Hogan’s Heroes and The Dick Van Dyke Show. The studio has been independently owned and operated since 1974.

Great so now we can buy cameras from our competitor?

I would not see RED as a competitor -studio wise. Nothing is clear yet what they are going to do with the studio. Maybe it becomes mainly a service point and demo and training site – which is a good strategy IMHO for a “newcomer”. Many poeple may get hands-on experience there.

And if they are going to rent out the studio, it is not really an issue anyway. ARRI has ARRI Digital – a full blown post production, as well as its own rental etc. Sony has Sony Picture Image Works – a film production doing block buster movies. If you see this with RED as an issue, you can’t use ARRI or SONY stuff either…

On a positive note this would be a good way for them to realize how to support their clients better as they would be in the seat and the real arena where their clients are.

I wonder if RED wasn’t around, would Sony, Panavision or if any others would be moving beyond 1080p HD by now on 2/3″ chips? Sure it would be possible, but would they have? I guess RED truely does not support their clients after all. Any suggestions for RED Christian?

    I agree Axel.

And if Sony hadn’t invented the 24p electronic camera, would anyone have done it? Who actually set the bar here?

Sony didn’t invent the 24P scheme. Engineers at Laser Pacific figured it out as a way to handle the four different delivery formats that the broadcasters said they were going to use. Since LP had to deliver, they went looking for a way to avoid building four pipelines, and 1080-24P was a sort of common denominator.
They asked Sony to build it- first as decks.. Then Lucas choose to do the Star Wars movies. Lately its been Cameron asking for adaptations to 3d.
Its been a long time since any of the camera giants built something truly fresh unless some big customer asked for it.
In the case of Lucas and Cameron, they invested too.
