From Mike Jones Digital Basin: The Culture of Editors – is FCP to blame for mediocrity?

Mike Jones of the Mike Jones Digital Basin has written a very well thought out follow up to my piece What’s Wrong With the Young FCP Editor? I thought at first that Mike was really going to disagree with the point I was trying to make as he points out that the whole offline/online workflow “is an archaic legacy process from a time when computers were not powerful to edit online.” He is absolutely right that that isn’t the case anymore. I did point out that there’s more to an online than the recapture of low resolution materials but maybe this is a point in time when we need to find new terms for the final finishing of an edit, after all the creative decisions have been make and the picture is locked. Or perhaps we need to redefine the offline and online terms. That seems to make the most sense. I won’t attempt to summarize Mike’s post here as it’s too lengthy and too good to try and do it justice, so just click over and read for yourself. Another great entry into this ongoing debate.
