Gamma & Density, Synthetic Aperture Bring On-Set Color System to iOS

Working with development partner Synthetic Aperture, Gamma & Density has ported its 3cP on-set color-correction system to the iPad and iPhone. G&D founding partner and CEO Yuri Neyman was at NAB demoing iC Image Control, which he said is currently being reviewed by Apple before making its way to the App Store.

The iPad version of iC supports printer lights, curves, lift-gain-gamma controls, 3D LUTs, and the ASC’s CDL for camera types including Canon DSLR, ARRI Alexa, RED MX and Epic, and Sony F23 and F35. Footage is retrieved by the iPad once it’s been transfered from the camera to a PC or laptop. It includes a screen calibration system and supports custom profiles corresponding to specific film stocks, filters, or special processing (push, pull, bleach bypass, etc).

Essentially, it’s designed to move on-set video review away from the video village, giving directors and DPs a little more elbow room when they’re making look decisions on set. Waveform-monitor, vectorscope and histogram displays are selectable, and tools for cropping and annotating images with extra matadata are included.

It works in conjunction with the existing OS X 3cP application or as a standalone iOS app. Information about color decisions and other annotations can be emailed to post-production from the app.

During a quick demo, the iPad version of the app seemed very impressive, sporting a clear interface with familiar color-correction tools. The iPhone version was, in a way, more impressive, though its stripped-down interface and relatively tiny screen will likely make it much less practical.
