Thom Blackburn, creative director of Solid, a three-year-old Santa Monica, CA, motion-design and production studio, says the company's pop-culture-addicted staff taps into the zeitgeist by making a daily routine of poring over tabloids and fashion magazines, and ingesting as much TV programming as their brains can handle. Blackburn and crew also keep up with the latest production action in the trades, and start chasing the jobs that they think they'd be a good match for. One of those projects was a main title and show package for the recent VH1 reality series, I Know My Kid's a Star, in which former child actor Danny Bonaduce shepherds a group of parent-child combos through a series of tests designed to determine which of the kids has the best shot at success in show business. Solid approached the show opener by building a rickety funhouse ride, full of pitfalls, that represents the shaky road to fame.
