A mind-boggling array of possibilities faced Stardust Studios (Santa Monica, CA and New York, NY) as it began production on “From 8 to 1,” the first spot in a new broadcast campaign promoting the WNBA playoffs for agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Working from the idea that the spot will depict players from eight different women’s basketball teams being whittled down to just one champion, director Jake Banks and VFX supervisor Andrew Ashton had to make sure that they acquired all the footage they might need for the campaign in just two days’ worth of shooting. Fully 14 teams were still in contention for a final-eight playoff berth at the time of the shoot, so Stardust had to shoot a player from each of those teams in every conceivable position they might need to be seen in, for a campaign that would follow the tournament process as eight teams become four, then two, and finally one. That will allow Stardust to create new spots depicting the teams that remain in the competition as the playoffs progress.
Watch the spot, below, then read our Q&A with Banks and Ashton for background info.

They spent all their time and energy on the visual. But they couldn't do a simple edit of audio? They should have cut off the last two words. UNPROFESSIONAL!! I would NOT hire that Producer!

The WNBA is rising in prominence, and this is a very prestigious campaign for them. Congrats to everyone at the agency and everyone else involved for a stellar promotional campaign.
