Generating Internet DVD Sales For Indies

Pennsauken, NJ, DVD replicator Discmakers is trying to open up what VP of Sales and Marketing Tony van Veen refers to as "a Web channel for independent filmmakers." The result is Film Baby, a new strategic partnership between Discmakers and the folks behind Portland-based CD Baby, an online seller of independent music. Discmakers already replicates CDs for CD Baby— which says it has paid more than $10 million to indie musicians through what is essentially an online consignment system— and hopes to duplicate that strategy with filmmakers.

Discmakers will manufacture DVDs for indie filmmakers who sign up with the program. Streaming trailers will be hosted for free at the Film Baby Web site, where an e-commerce engine takes orders for physical product. The service launches next month at Filmbaby.com.
