Users of cameras with uncompressed HD-SDI outputs, including the ARRI D-21, the Panasonic AJ-HPX3700 VariCam, and the Sony F23 and F35, have a new tapeless workflow option with the Keisoku Giken (KG) UDR-D100 portable uncompressed recorder. The recorder outputs uncompressed image sequences in formats including AVI, CINEON, DPX, and QuickTime to one of two types of "media pack" — a 1.5 TB 2.5-inch S-ATA hard disk or a 384 GB 2.5-inch S-ATA solid-state drive. Recording uncompressed images means the footage will be ready to use easily in editing and VFX apps.

The hard-disk version of the media pack offers 129 minutes of 1080p/24 10-bit 4:4:4 recording, compared to 26 minutes for the smaller Flash version. Two-channel analog sound can be recorded in sync with picture. The recorder has a built-in preview monitor, as well as a monitor output, for immediate playback.

The UDR-D100 can also be used to record stereo HD at 4:2:2 using its two-channel HD-SDI input, KG said, and North American reseller Abel Cine Tech says that two units can be synchronized to capture stereo HD at 4:4:4. It's compatible with variable-frame-rate footage from the VariCam and raw data from the D21.

The company said the unit is "double-shielded" for protection from dust, and is suitable for shooting in "unusual conditions," including from such high-stress locations as an airplane or moving automobile. The recorder body weighs 7.7 pounds and the HDD pack weighs 3.3 pounds. It consumes less than 75W of power when using the hard disk and less than 65W using Flash, KG said. It can be remote-controlled via RS-422.
