JVC demonstrated a 4K 60p camera, the KY-F4000, at NAB last week. The company expects to sell the camera for less than $200,000 starting next April, but here’s the kicker — with live signal output, it’s not intended as a camera for film production but rather as a tool for teleconferencing.
The company figures that, as projectors like its own DLA-SH4K, which started shipping last September, show up in high-end corporate and military conference rooms, it makes sense to offer an easy way for those users to get a very large, very high resolution picture with a minimum of fuss.
The camera uses a single, 1.25-inch CMOS imaging chip. The camera head is 6.6 pounds, and can be separated from the rest of the unit at up to 328 feet. The demo unit was fitted with a Nikon 35mm lens mount, but JVC is keeping its options open and says it could be a PL mount by the time the camera ships, depending on customer demand. The camera has an RGB Bayer color filter and dual-link HD-SDI output at 4:2:2 10-bit, or single-link DVI at 4:4:4 8-bit. It’s switchable between 60p and 59.94 frame rates.
