Record Direct to ProRes 422 with AJA Ki Pro

Ever wish you could just record directly to Apple’s ProRes format? Well, maybe the folks at AJA have been reading your mind. The new Ki Pro (June, $3995) is a portable tapeless recording device that writes ProRes 422 QuickTimes onto 34mm ExpressCards or removable storage modules. Pull out the storage modules and connect them to your Mac and you’re ready to edit in a high-quality, Final Cut-native format.

The Ki Pro is no slouch when it comes to connectivity. The box includes HDMI in/out; SDI in/out; component in/out; composite out; balanced and unbalanced audio in/out; LTC in/out; Firewire 400 and 800; RJ45 Ethernet 10/100/1000; and a 4-pin XLR power connector. It works with any digital camera via SDI or HDMI or with any analog camera that can plug into the component or composite connections. If you like, you can record to your camera’s on-board storage at the same time for redundancy or back-up purposes.

The removable storage modules contain either hard disks or solid-state memory and function as standard bus-powered FireWire 800 drives. They also have a standard DC power connector.

The Ki Pro can be mounted on the tripod below your camera with an optional “exo-skeleton” that has a sliding baseplate and slots for 15mm rods. An optional accessory kit adds endplates to the exo-skeleton. It’s controllable via standard front-panel button operation or remotely using a Web browser on a laptop or iPhone, and an AJA lens tap cable accessory allows the Ki Pro to sit between the lens tap control connector and the camera body.

This seems like a really cool product. It's about time they made it easier to record directly to Pro Res 422. The next step will be to make it even smaller in size so it can attach directly to hand-held cameras.
