Q&A: XenData Co-Founder/CEO Phil Storey on LTO, Solving the Avid Archive Problem, and the Future of Tape   [Studio Daily]

By Bryant Frazer

XenData has built a business on facilitating the connection between LTO-5 tape archives and all the stuff in a facility's "tapeless" workflow — all the gear that expects to be writing to disks, not tapes, at the end of the day. Basically, XenData figures out ways to make those tapes look like disk-based storage, eliminating one more workflow headache as vendors and users work out how to get all of their equipment working in harmony. At IBC this week, XenData is stepping up with a new revision of its flagship server product and new technology collaborations with companies like Harmonic and Avid. We asked company CEO Phil Storey to give us a preview, and asked him what's next after tape....  »

Q&A: Small Tree's Steve Modica on Storage Protocols   [Studio Daily]

By Bryant Frazer

Founded in 2003, Small Tree Communications focuses on the Mac platform, offering a variety of storage solutions with an emphasis on cost-efficiency. StudioBytes once again approached Small Tree's CTO, Steve Modica, to ask him what content creators need to understand about storage protocols. In an opinionated Q&A, he told us that clustered file systems are obsolete, bandwidth is overrated, and "scalability" is a dead end....  »

Q&A: XenData Co-founder/CEO Phillip Storey   [Studio Daily]

By Bryant Frazer

XenData Archive Series software does something simple but powerful — it makes a tape archive look like a disk drive, thus simplifying the process of reading and writing to tape. Geared specifically toward the media-and-entertainment industries, XenData's software is in use by customers that manage large media libraries on behalf of their own clients —Modern VideoFilm is a customer, as are London's Re:fine and Canberra, Australia's DAMSmart!. We got XenData co-founder and CEO Phil Storey to fill us in on the technology, explain some usage scenarios, and even give us a preview of what we'll see at NAB next month....  »
