Making Old Plug-ins Work in Premiere Pro 2

Post your comments below

About three years ago Pinnacle Systems fatefully decided to end its lucrative relationship with Adobe, and its hardware and software support for Premiere. Part of that was not even updating their popular Hollywood FX transitions plug-ins to work in the new Premiere Pro. Pinnacle System’s thinking was if their customers couldn’t use the Hollywood FX plugins in Premiere Pro, they would switch to Pinnacle’s Liquid Edition, where they did work. Well as we know, that plan was a dismal failure. It angered a lot of loyal customers, dealers and anyone else who had to deal with Pinnacle Systems. In 2005 Avid Technology purchased Pinnacle Systems. If you are one of those Hollywood FX customers who was left out in the cold, here is the solution. FYI this procedure may work with other plug-ins. I have also used this procedure with Smartsounds Quicktracks and Granger FX before they had there new installer programs to make them work with Premiere Pro 1 – 2.0.

If Hollywood FX is not yet installed on the system install as normal.

STEP 1: Install

STEP 2: Import Hollywood FX into Program Files

Using Windows Explorer go to the Program Files folder on the system drive, then locate and enter the Pinnacle folder and then enter the Hollywood FX folder. In the Hollywood FX folder look for the Host Plugins. In the Host Plugins file enter the Premiere6 folder. Select the Fx-HfxP646.prm file then copy it. Back in the Program Files folder locate the Adobe folder. In the Adobe folder go into the Adobe Premiere Pro 2 then into the Plug-ins folder. In the Plug-ins folder open the en_US folder and paste the Fx-HfxP646.prm file in the en_US folder and close Windows Explorer.

STEP 3: Run Premiere Pro 2

Once Premiere 2 is running add a couple clips to the timeline. Expand the video transition folder and you will notice the Hollywood FX transition. Put it between the clips.

STEP 4: Apply Hollywood FX

Under the Effects Control palette click on the custom button, this will bring up the Hollywood FX control panel where you can choose the desired transition.

Your Guide

Marc Franklin has been producing video at his company Franklin Video Productions, and consulting on video production with other companies and government organizations for since 1991. He writes for a wide spectrum of publications in the production industry. Marc Says Keep In Mind...
This process will allow you to use Hollywood FX as you have in the past, except for two things. One limitation is that if you have the timeline needle between the clips, or anywhere that will be over lapped by the Hollywood FX transition when you put it there, no matter what you choose in the HFX menu, it will only render the default transition.

The other limitation may be more serious. If you never activated HFX on the computer you are using and don’t have an activation code, you maybe SOL. Avid took the Hollywood FX registration page for Premiere plug-ins off there web site. I’m currently lobbying them to put it back. I’ll let people know when I get results.

thanks for the solution for Hollywood FX in Premier Pro. Do yopu have a similar solution for the use of Crystal Vortex in the same way. I tried to and it didn\\\'t seem to work. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

What version of Hollywood FX do you need for this to work. I have got FX 5, but it doesn't seem to have the file stated in the FX folder

Dick - I'm not familiar with Crystal Vortex, so can't really help you there.

Sami - What exactly are you trying to do with mpeg-1? If you are trying to convert from DV to mpeg-1, I can see how it would be a long render on a non top of the line machine.

Thanks for the tip on using Pinnacle HFX in Premiere Pro 2.0. It has added additional value to the product. Those of us that "grew up" with both application really appreciate this. Can you help to integrate TitleDeko also into Premiere Pro 2.0? That will be awsome. Thanks again!

The files in my computer are Fx-HfxP646.fex, not .prm. Will it work if I rename the files with a .prm file name?

I tried unsucessfully to do the same with Title deko 2, to no avail. The best you can do is run Title Deko as a stand alone titler, and instead of saving the graphic as only a .tdk file, you have the option to save as a .tga file also. You can easily import the tga file to Premiere Pro. The only hitch is if you need to make an adjustment you need to reload the .tdk file in to Title Deko an resave the .tdk and .tga files. It is a pain but it works. Although I miss some of the Title Deko features, I've grown to like the Premire Pro titler a lot. I hope this helps.

I have versions 9, 10 and 11 of Pinnacle Studio installed on my computer. When I open the HollywoodFX 5 folder it does not have a Premiere folder nor any file similar to Fx-HfxP646.prm. Where are you finding this file? Would this work if someone was kind enough to send me a copy of Fx-HfxP646.prm and I placed it in the Premiere plugins folder?

OK, to make a long story short here's what I have learned through my research on this Premiere plugin. It is only available with Hollywood Fx 4.6. That version is only available in Pinnacle Studio 8 (possibly Studio 7). Studio 9 installs Hollywood FX 5 which does not have the plugin. My version of Hollywood Fx in Studio 8 was 4.6.2 which did not have the plugin, however I found the update online at Pinnacle that does. There are two updates. One is Hollywood FX 4.6.7 and the other is Creative Collection Hollywood Fx 4.6.7. The creative collection version has the Premiere plugin. After downloading and installing it I found the Fx-HfxP646.prm file and installed it in Premiere Pro CS3 and have it working successfully.
The Pinnacle link for the update is
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/docsupport1.asp?division_id=8&langue_id=7&product_id=19&product_name=HollywoodFX%20Pro&page_id=67
or you can Google Creative Collection HFX.
Hope this helps all.

Premiere Pro 2.0 probably won't work with the DV 500. The only thing you could probably do with it is 1394 capture and export. No real time FX to the monitor. I'd consider trading up to the Matrox RTx2 ot RTx2 SD if you don't do HD yet.

Hi it\\\'s me again.. Woo..wooo Good news guys, Guess what I have made the HFX V5.xx work with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, Here is how:
1. Copy \\\"HfxEdt5.vfx\\\" to your Premiere plugins directory and change VFX file extension to PRM.
Make sure you only change the file extension, not the file name.
The default location for \\\"HfxEdt5.vfx\\\" is C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Pinnacle\\\\Hollywood FX 5\\\\Host Plugins.
Default PPro plugin folder is C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Adobe\\\\Premiere Pro x.x\\\\Plug-ins\\\\en_US
2. Follow the steps above for \\\"Fl_HfxEdt5\\\". The file is found in C:\\\\Program Files\\\\Pinnacle\\\\Hollywood FX 5\\\\Host Plugins\\\\EditionFilter.

Hi guys/(girls?). Thanks for all the suggestions!! However, they don't seem to work for me yet. I followed #41 (Narinh K.) since I am moving from Studio 9Plus to Premiere CS3. I have Prog Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins\Edition, with the HfxEdt5.vfx. Using/modifying this as in #41 does not work for me. No Pinnacle apppears in CS3. I also have another folder: Hollywood FX for Studio/5.5/Host Plugins with 2 sub-folders (1) Rtfxstudio with 3 files: HfxRTFxSFilter.xml, HfxRTFxSTransition.xml and HFxRTFxStudio.fex ; and (2) Studio with HfxForStudio.dll.
Who can help?

It appears that this trick won't work in PPro CS4. I tried with the press beta. Adobe redid the way that plug-ins work. Even Plug-ins that did work natively with CS3 and before will need to be updated by there makers to work with CS4. I'll inquire as to why they did that.

Pinnacle Hollywood FX Pro 5.XX also work with adobe Premiere CS4, Just Install the Hollywood FX Pro 5.xx Then copy "HfxEdt5.vfx " to your Premiere plugins /Common/ directory and change VFX file extension to PRM.

It work fine even with CS4, but there are a few small limitations -

1. HFX does not understand the concept of layers in new PP, hence multilayer effects go for a toss.

2. The effects don't show up in time-line until to restart PP.
