What to See at IBC

Another trade show, another 10,000 frequent flier miles. In order to make sure you don’t miss anything in the purple haze of Amsterdam, or New Jersey, or Venice Beach for that matter, here’s a quick rundown of what’s hot at IBC this year.




Much like NAB, the RED Digital Camera once again has a high-frequency buzz at IBC 2006. This time it will be showing off it’s redesigned camera body and 4K images from the camera. Some people that have seen the images said they are very impressive. Check back Friday for a First Look at the Red Camera from IBC.

Staying with cameras, Fujinon will debut two 18x HD lenses For ∏ -inch HD cameras, the HSs18x5.5BERM-D38 and HSs18x5.5BERD-D38 HD lenses, which feature high zoom ratios and 2x extender designed for production and ENG apps. [Press Release]

After unveiling the new versions of 3ds Max and Maya at SIGGRAPH in July, those across the pond will get their first live glimpse of Autodesk’s offerings. And as always there will be a number of Autodesk users showing off their work on such films as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, X-Men: The Last Stand, Stickfighter and Southland Tales. Antics announced version 2 its revolutionary real time animated pre-viz software application will be officially released on 16 October 2006. Antics are offering potential customers a 'Q-Jumper' opportunity in which users will be able to try a full, pre-release version of Antics V2 from today, for 21 days, before the official release date. Matrox adds support for JVC’s ProHD HDV 720p format in the new versions the Matrox Axio realtime HD and SD editing platforms and version 2 of Matrox RT.X2 realtime HDV and DV editing platform.

For an eye on DI, Iridas will unveil SpeedGrade HD, offering real-time primary and secondary color grading capabilities along with EDL conform on the Mac and Windows platforms. Pixel Farm the release of PFClean 2, which also includes a film restoration extension pack including de-warp, missing/damaged frame replacement, tear repair and color correction. [Press Release]

Among the digital cinema products, QuVis will be showcasing its 4K DCI compatible JPEG2000 QuVIS Digital Cinema System including direct 4K playback, real-time 2K extraction from a 4K master, and the ability to author DCI compatible DCPs at both 2K and 4K. [Press Release]

Tiger Technology will showcase two storage and networking solutions. The MetaSAN management software solution that supports Digidesign Pro Tools, Windows 64-bit OS and volumes up to 18 exabytes in size. It also unveils stoneGate, a virtual file system that enables raw image sequences stored on Autodesk Media and Entertainment Stone file system to be manipulated using standard graphics and animation workstations over a regular LAN connection. stoneGate exploits the Wiretap API to convert the hierarchical structure of the Stone’s Clip Library into a virtual file system that maps as a local drive on the client’s workstation. Users can remotely browse through multiple Machines, Volumes, Projects, Libraries, and Clip folders to access the individual frames. These are exposed as standard graphic files (RAW, BMP, TIFF, DPX, and Cineon) that can then be read or written using standard graphics, animations, paint, editing, and compositing applications such as Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, and Autodesk Combustion.

To address the issue of archiving and retrieval of large amounts of data, Quantum will show its SDLT 600A tape drive technology and the SuperLoader 3A for workflows with larger storage requirements. Both feature a tape-based file system, gigabit Ethernet connectivity and MXF-aware capabilities which are catalysts for the migration to an end-to-end file-based workflow. These scaleable archive solutions offer 300 GB to 4.8 TB of removable networked storage. [Press Release]

Released at NAB 2006, Omneon MediaGrid storage system gets its European debut at IBC. The MediaGrid system provides centralized shared storage that is scalable in capacity, bandwidth, and media processing power. At IBC2006, Omneon will also introduce the next version of its ProBrowse proxy generation and management system that adds significant enhancements for media management and video processing. ProBrowse 2.0 now incorporates intelligent scene change detection, automatically creating picons, or key frames, at each scene change. These picons contain an exact timecode reference allowing users to jump to the beginning of any desired scene in the clip or use the timecode values to provide a frame-accurate shot list to craft editors.
