IRIDAS and S.two Integrate .Look file and DFR Technologies

IRIDAS, who introduced the first non-destructive color grading technology in the film industry, and S.Two, a leading developer of acquisition and workflow solutions for digital cinematography, have announced that the two companies are integrating their .Look file and digital film recorder technologies to create a seamless storage and data management system for digital production work. Filmmakers will now be able to store editable creative looks together with their data, streamlining production as well as providing a comprehensive metadata framework for efficient postproduction workflows.

The integration has been implemented in all S.Two products including Take.2, the second-generation DFR from S.Two which provides improved mobility and can run on battery power for work in remote locations. IRIDAS’ SpeedGrade .Look file format saves grading as non-destructive metadata resulting in exceptionally small file sizes which are editable and easily exchanged. DPX frames from the film recorder are loaded into a laptop where .Looks are created - or existing .Looks applied - with SpeedGrade OnSet. The .Looks are then exported back to the film recorder where they are saved as metadata and can be applied in real time to the monitoring outputs, either globally, or on a take-by-take basis.

“We plan to demonstrate the system at the DGA Digital Day event to show filmmakers just how simple it can be,” said Steve Roach, VP at S.Two Corp. “To be meaningful, creative looks should be directly associated with the data. Saving them as metadata allows the DP and director to apply looks to offline materials using the S.Two i.DOCK with IRIDAS FrameCycler or SpeedGrade as an integrated process.”

“S.Two has always worked very closely with filmmakers under production conditions to ensure smooth implementation of digital film technologies,” said IRIDAS CEO Lin Kayser. “We value their commitment to the artist. With the integration of our non-destructive grading technologies and S.Two’s expertise in data recording, we are expanding the tool set of the modern filmmaker.”
