AES Gets Ready for HDTV

With the 119th AES Convention arriving at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City next month, convention broadcast chair David Bialik reports that this year’s show will offer the most broadcast-related events in the organization’s history, including a panel focusing exclusively on HDTV. "Our Audio for HDTV panel (chaired by PBS Director of Engineering, Andy Butler) will examine shifts and advances in the evolution of this important technology," says Bialik. Panelists Rocky Graham of Dolby Laboratories, Alan Kraemer (tbc) of SRS and Geir Skaaden of Neural Audio, among others, will discuss critical production, transmission and reception issues facing those who are or will be transitioning to HDTV.

Also on tap are several tutorials, including "Mixing a Live Broadcast In Surround," demonstrated by Mike Pappas and "Designing a Broadcast Facility for 5.1," by Radio Magazine editor Chriss Scherer.

According to Bialik, a live performance of an audio drama, produced by 93-year-old live radio doyen Himan Brown, will cap the festivities. " Himan is talking with some high-profile actors, and this production promises to be an unforgettable experience," says Bialik.
