EditShare, a provider of collaborative video editing systems, has introduced an improved version of its shared storage technology. Version 5.0 was designed to smooth and extend the workflow process in editing environments with multiple users.

Traditionally, in edit systems with a large number of users, the system needs to re-scan to make new media available to all suites. With EditShare 5.0, the media appears immediately with no interruption to the workflow. Duplicate media files now move across two or more servers—whether they’re located in the same building or on the other side of the world.

The system, which can handle any format from offline to uncompressed HD, now offers multiple levels of file protection. There’s a new read-only option, as well as a new “maintenance mode” for deleting and modifying files.

The upgrade allows plug-and-play network configuration, meaning EditShare can now be configured to act just a like a switch for easy deployment. Plug in a workstation and connect to media on the office network. To stay ahead of problems, administrators receive a daily e-mail “health report” detailing server status and performance.

Deployed first for Avid systems and editors, EditShare Project Sharing technology will soon be extended to Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP). The feature will enable multiple editors to work on the same project simultaneously. This eliminates the time consuming exporting and importing of XML files and duplication of FCP project files.

As with all EditShare systems, the rights management and rules-driven architecture allow administrators to pre-define user access and prevent overwrites.

The EditShare Project Sharing functionality for FCP will ship as part of the EditShare 5.0 standard feature set in the third quarter of 2007. Existing EditShare 5.0 customers will be provided an update with the new Apple FCP Project Sharing feature free of charge.
