It’s designed for medical imaging, but a new four-ounce 3-CCD HD camera from Microcast is so small it can provide a variety of heretofore-impossible POV shots.

Microcast HD can be installed on any research-grade microscope for close-ups of even the most evil virus. However, the camera’s flexibility is enhanced by its standard C-mount lens adapter and real-time, 36-bit RGB image processing with extreme dynamic range even in low light.

The camera delivers full high-definition progressive-scan image resolution of 1920 x1080p (2.07 million) pixels at 60 frames per second. Image outputs include 2X DVI, RGB, S-Video and DV.

The camera can feed DV-compatible recorders and computers using a standard high-speed Firewire interface. It works with Macs or PCs and images can be edited with applications such as Apple’s iMovie.

Whereas traditional large-format-sensor cameras offer megapixel resolution, they typically produce slow frame rates that do not exceed three to 10 frames per second. Traditionally, 3-CCD cameras offer faster frame rates but lack the resolution and detail required for demanding microscope inspection applications. Microcast HD, the manufacturer said, is the first camera with microscope capability that offers both megapixel resolution and speed.

Microcast HD is controlled using either a tactile remote control keypad interface or programmable head buttons located on the lightweight low-profile camera head. A 15-foot interconnect cable connects the head to the camera control unit, which weighs 8.95 ounces. A 20-foot extension cable is available for applications requiring even further separation. The Microcast cable connections utilize a rugged card-edge connector that makes connecting and unconnecting cables simple without having to worry about small pins bending or breaking.
