Isilon’s Clustered Systems Support “Virtualized” Data Storage

Post your comments below

Storage provider Isilon Systems is upping the ante on massive data libraries with its X-Series IQ clustered storage system, providing what it says is 100 times the scalability and 20 times the performance of traditional SAN and NAS storage systems. The new product is making possible the idea of a “virtualized” data center with unlimited capacity and complete access to store HD media files.

The X-Series storage systems can scale to greater than 1.6 petabytes of capacity and provide performance of 10 gigabytes per second in a single file system and single volume.

Isilon today announced that more than 60 customers, including Arcis Corporation, Austin Radiological Association, Kodak Gallery, and PetroChina have already adopted Isilon's X-Series to gain instant access to critical business information while dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of managing storage growth.

The X-Series leverages Intel’s Xeon 5130 processor to dramatically increase the performance and power efficiency of its systems. This includes Isilon's OneFS operating system software, which can create a single, shared pool of virtualized storage to meet the requirements for the massive storage of HD content in a variety of formats and compression schemes. Data write and random access has been increased by up to 60 percent over its previous systems.

Isilon's X-Series achieves 20 percent greater power efficiency over the previous architecture, thanks to new power consumption efficiencies gained with hardware advancements from Intel and ColdWatt. The X-Series delivers a single point of management for a shared pool of storage, making it simple to configure, manage and provision storage resources.
