Just seven months after the introduction of Smoke 2008 at IBC last year, Autodesk today announced the coming release of Smoke 2009 with expanded format support and an introductory price point that the company hopes will attract a broader base of customers. A turnkey Smoke HD system will be available for a starting price of $64,000, with storage (April 1 through July 21, 2008). New features in the VFX-centric editing and finishing system include support for Panasonic P2 MXF and QuickTime files and a new clip browser, called WiretapCentral, that lets users browse clip libraries and encode files through a network-connected Web browser.
The 2K version of Smoke 2009, which Autodesk also plans to offer at an undisclosed promotional price, will feature Batch FX, a tree-based compositing workflow that links Smoke's editorial timeline with a 3D compositing interface.
