Sony Unveils New Multi-codec Blu-Ray Encoder

Sony has a new fast and cost-effective solution for Blu-ray Disc encoding. The BAE-VX1000 multi-codec video encoder provides real-time processing of MPEG-2 or H.264/AVC primary and secondary video streams suitable for the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format.

For large duplication houses, the BAE-VX1000 encoder offers BD-ROM to BD-Live specs via network enabled features and supports the BD-R/RE format for small-quantity production. Leveraging parallel capturing and pre-processing, the elimination of LDEC checking, and increased encoding algorithm efficiency, the new encoder is said to decrease total encoding time by up to 30 percent over Sony’s existing BAE-VA700 solution.

It can also be set up in a single PC configuration that can accomplish AVC encoding in real time, making it suitable for smaller production houses, and can be easily expanded for networked distributed processing for higher performance.

The BAE-VX1000’s multi-codec design features compatibility with most common Blu-ray authoring applications, such as Sony Creative Software’s Blu-Print and Sonic Solutions’ Scenarist. The option of using of AVC or MPEG-2 technology will give production professionals more flexibility, depending on their timeframe, client preference or other individual workflow requirements. MPEG-2 encoding for traditional DVD authoring is also available.

There are multiple settings for individual production needs, such as an Express mode for AVC real-time encoding with one PC. When using additional networked processors, “fast” and “quality” modes are available to meet higher performance and quality priorities. TheBAE-VX1000 also offers a built in real-time AVC elementary stream decoder that greatly improves the efficiency of quality-checking procedures.
