ProxyMill Automatically Converts P2 Files to Low-Res Versions

Looking for ways to streamline your solid-state workflow? Imagine Products has begun shipping ProxyMill, a new Mac application for Panasonic P2 users that automatically creates low-resolution QuickTime proxies with frame-accurate timecode when P2 card images are found in a designated watch folder. The compressed proxies — typically used for customer review, or to allow editorial to get a head start on material without sending them full-res files from the field — may be saved to the proxy folder of the source P2 volumes, or can be directed to a specified folder on the local disk.

ProxyMill ($199) works with every P2 format, including DVCPRO HD, DV, and AVC Intra. The main application window shows a list of movies and their processing status, along with such data as parent folder, MXF file name, original size and proxy size. The app is designed to eliminate the need for users to import P2 clips into an editor for proxy export.

The files created by ProxyMill include frame-accurate timecode based on the source media, ensuring that they're suitable for offline editorial work. Users can exclude P2 audio tracks to reduce file sizes. The software can be used to quickly make proxies from any existing QuickTime, no matter the source.

ProxyMill works on Intel macs running OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and QuickTime 7.5 or higher. (Power PC and OS X 10.4 users are out of luck.) A user can activate it on one desktop and one portable (laptop/notebook) system.
