Cinnafilm will unveil its HD1 real-time film-look visual-effects system at NAB, designed to transform HD digital video images to the classic look of film.

Cinnafilm, a New Mexico-based developer of video algorithms that leverage massive parallel graphics processing units (GPUs), will show a new process that minimizes the time it takes to process interlaced digital video on April 15 and 16 at the Mandalay Bay Media Suite in Las Vegas.

The system harnesses the power of advanced 3D graphics hardware at a rate that delivers 30x to 100x performance improvement on computational video tasks compared with a modern CPU. This leap in processing power means rendering is no longer an issue, freeing up countless hours of labor and re-work at a fraction of the price.

Instead of synthetic overlays, Cinnafilm completely reconstructs the digital video data stream to appear as if it were shot on organic film. The patent-pending process handles any SD or HD video up to 10-bit uncompressed RGB/YUV 4:4:4.

The need and desire to make video look more like film is a considerable challenge due to high transfer costs and limitations of available technologies that are not only time consuming, but provide poor results. Cinnafilm HD1 technology is said to fill this void by changing the appearance of digital video footage to look like film while performing the service fluidly at theater resolution in real time without sacrificing quality.

The Cinnafilm HD1 film-look system facilitates the real-time application of film-look effects to SD and HD digital video in full resolution and the ease of integration into video post-processing and HD editing systems.
