Director/Producer Dr. Paul Cahill used JVC’s GY-HD100 HDV camcorder to shoot a 30-minute documentary on Asian elephants called The Long Goodbye. The feature highlights the harsh conditions faced by domesticated animals in Thailand and the importance of their preservation.
The images were recorded in 720p resolution at a shutter speed of 1/50.
Cahill said the JVC GY-HD100 isn’t the most robust camcorder on the market, but it withstood the rigors of being jettisoned from the luggage compartment of a moving bus and being knocked down by playful elephants, as well as prolonged exposure to high temperatures, tropical humidity, and torrential rainfalls.
Most of the sequences for the documentary were edited with Final Cut Pro, from over 19 hours of video recorded in Thailand last July.
