WHY I LOVE IT: We did a lot of research on products and EditShare came out on top: it was the best priced and highest quality shared media system that could use our existing Ethernet networking infrastructure. Other solutions either offered fewer seats for more money, or required a prohibitively expensive new fiber optic cable infrastructure. It was also the only solution that offered our editors the ability to work in shared Avid Projects.

"With several big projects running concurrently, we were finding that the management of our media was getting out of control. We had 23 editors needing simultaneous access to all new footage, plus we had media from two previous seasons of A&E’s Dog the Bounty Hunter that had to be available for use in the new season. It was time to make a choice: either continue buying an ever-mounting number of external drives or look into implementing a centralized storage solution that would allow collaborative editing from a single pool of media. This is when we turned to EditShare.

Connected to the 9.6TB EditShare system are 15 full editing suites running Avid Xpress Pro on Macintosh G5s, as well as several PowerBook G4s and iMac G5s to do light editing and screening. The EditShare system gives our editors the ability to digitize into and edit from the same Media Spaces.

At any given time, each one of them can work from the exact same shared Avid project files and access every second of video shot for the previous two seasons of Dog the Bounty Hunter, at 15:1 offline resolution. And thanks to EditShare’s comprehensive media management and security features, everyone can work with the knowledge that files and shared Avid bins aren’t getting erased or modified by editors who don’t have the proper authority.

It’s only been a few months and already we have a more streamlined workflow, if only for the fact that we don’t have to copy media anymore!"
