Since its launch three years ago, EditShare in Boston has provided a line of digital video storage servers that allow nonlinear editing applications to share media and project files. This lets video editors work collaboratively over a LAN.
While allowing the connected workstations to create and access a common pool of media files, EditShare also guarantees that individual workstations never interfere with—or accidentally erase the files of—other workstations on the network.
The system interfaces with most high-definition NLE systems, including Avid Xpress DV, Xpress Pro, and Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Canopus (Grass Valley) EDIUS.
Now the company is taking its technology on the road.
The new EditShare Field is a new server system designed specifically for mobile editing. Based on the latest EditShare software (version 4.0), the Field system replicates the same feature set of its big brothers in a portable, rugged casing for secure transportation and storage.
The manufacturer calls EditShare Field “the world’s only portable shared storage system to offer Avid project sharing.” That means multiple editors, set up in portable environments such as hotel rooms, production trailers or even jungle tents, can work on the same Avid project and get instant read-only access to each other’s bins and sequences.
The EditShare Field system comes standard with 3 TB of RAID 5 storage; support for SD, DV, HDV, DNx HD video formats; the capability to handle an unlimited number of users; a redundant operating system drive; redundant laptop-style external power supplies; and an internal battery UPS. In addition, the unit is rack-mountable.
