Posting Everybody Hates Chris on the Mac

Digital technology may have improved production and post, but it hasn’t shortened the brutally long workday. Is it even possible to use the latest technologies to lessen the stress and still remain as productive? Yes, says Erik Whitmyre, co-producer of Everybody Hates Chris, which just finished its first season with an all-Final Cut Studio 2, file-based workflow. “After this season, I just realized how spoiled and stress-free I was this year in comparison to seasons one and two,” says Whitmyre. “Talking to a number of editor and AP friends of mine, I heard about last-minute deliveries, massive overtime, screw-ups due to fixes. Our Final Cut workflow wasn’t just about saving money and being more efficient—which we were in a big way—but about how creative and humane a cutting room and post process can actually be in today’s environment.”

Sounds like a pretty standard HD workflow to me. Isn't it nice to get into the full HD world. Final Cut or Avid it's all about the work flow.

The workflow sounds great, but how was the final uncompressed show output? "all HD uncompressed quality". So they output uncompressed 1080p from FCP to SR? There is hope.

Incredible workflow. Democratization at its finest! Unleashing the power of file based workflow while allowing the human / creative element(s) to flourish. Using powerful tools and technology that gives more collaboration to all, more power to all and believe it or not as pointed out in your cost savings chart........ ultimately saves you time (time is money) and money. Could it be that this type workflow could allow everyone involved in this creative process to be home in time for dinner with their families? You bet and all the while maintaining the level of story telling that is expected on a hit show. Keep up the good work! Dennis Bress, President / CEO @ ieei.tv

We edit offline with DVCPro100 and give the sequence to DigtalFilm Tree; they do conform the show from the original HDCamSR tapes to HD uncomperssed - it is the one 'tape' based step left in our workflow.

People have been doing HD workflows for awhile so we are standard in joining that crowd. What is un-standard for a network TV series is to generalize the file based nature of the work to all - including color correction and to work on the SAME piece of software from dailies to final output.

We at "The Dub Stage " do the Sound Mixing in 5.1 for "Everybody Hates Chris" and working with Erik Whitmyre and Digital Film Tree has been GREAT! Very smooth! We love it!!
