Thoughts on NAB 2008: DI, 3D and (of course) RED

Post your comments below

The first thing I noticed about NAB 2008 was the quiet. South Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center is where all the interesting (read: software & new media) applications have been and, for the last several years, Avid and Apple had dominated the entire lower South hall. Across the aisle, the two behemoths outdid each other in terms of the size of their booth and the decibels of their demos. Of course, this caused a domino effect, and the entire hall reverberated with reverb. In the absence of Apple and Avid, some sanity prevailed. You could hear yourself and the person next to you talk.

I was there on the last day and had a great time, especially after the prinicpal for a documentary project finally called 5 minutes after I stepped inside. Excellent.

Cathy Plushner from Panasonic was very helpful in suggesting purchasing options for a HDX900 and deck.

Lowel was awesome and very helpful.

The Ikegami X10 blew me away, and as far as non tape based workflows, I think theirs is the best.

I have come to the conclusion the Red cam has become a cult affair. The sales rep did give me a straight answer for a production ready Red Cam, $35,000.

I like Sony's XDCAM 355.

I also liked that Segway configured with a StediCam.

I met a lot of people while pitching my latest project.

If all goes well and it is meant to be I will be there next year for 2 days instead of one.
