Overall Rating = Hot

Summary: A tapeless video recorder that attaches to inexpensive or older cameras, and lets them record a higher-quality picture than they could otherwise. What’s more, the Ki Pro records video as QuickTime files that are ready for editing in Final Cut Pro (no time-consuming digitizing or transcoding required).

Target Apps: Shooters who want better picture quality without buying a new camera. Producers looking to streamline their post-production workflow.

What It Costs You: $3,995

What’s Cool: An optional “exo-skeleton” lets you mount the Ki on your tripod, under the camera. Also, the Ki’s many inputs and outputs make it a great up/down/cross converter as well.

What’s Missing: A few features will be enabled with a future firmware update, including the use of ExpressCard 34 memory cards for storage, and an RS-422 port for deck control. If you’re editing in another application besides Final Cut Pro, you’ll miss out on some of the Ki’s convenience factor.

System Requirements: A camera with component, HDMI or HD-SDI output

Specs: Ki Pro Recorder; Ki Pro hard drive storage module (250GB); AC adapter 110/220 with 4-pin XLR connector

ROI Review: AJA Ki Pro

AJA’s Ki Pro lets your aging or inexpensive video camera record a sharper, better looking, and more editing-friendly picture than it could otherwise. Basically, think of the Ki as Viagra for video cameras.

Way overpriced... For 4k I could buy a new camera. At some point you just have to throw the old gear away and buy new stuff that is cheaper, better, faster, and smaller.
