Panasonic Bows New Low-Priced 'E Series' P2 Cards

Post your comments below

Switching to P2 is about to get a lot less expensive, thanks to a new line of low-priced P2 media introduced by Panasonic at its NAB press conference earlier this afternoon. John Baisley, the president of Panasonic Broadcast, called the P2 E Series a "new type" of P2 card, before noting that the E stands for "economy." The 64 GB P2 E-Series card certainly qualifies as economy-size, and Panasonic says it will list for just $998 when it ships in August. Compare that to the $1650 fetched by current 32 GB P2 cards. A 32 GB and a 16 GB E-Series P2 card are expected to ship next month, with $625 and $420 price tags, respectively.

so good. This is going to be huge in keeping P2 around. Finally the media costs less than the camera and you can afford to have a decent recording time.

I like to see that Panasonic is on the move with P2, I'm a big fan and shooting my current documentary with an HPX170, but I can't help wonder, when Red's Scarlet is eventually released, what will happen to the under $10K camera market? How will Panny and others respond to a new design point of single large chip, low cost cameras? It's an exciting time for camera evolution.

Thrilled to see the debut of the E Series. Anything that gets me more record time without the upfront cost... I'm jazzed. Now maybe I can afford to fill that second P2 slot on my HPX170!
