Flippant News recently pointed to an article on The Transom Review from Walter Murch. It’s not so much an article really as it is an essay from Murch that is a companion piece to earlier essay/lesson from Murch about sound. Each and every editor out there knows Murch is a rock star of the picture editing and sound editing world. This is a man who understands the art of editing like no other. While reading these essays I truly got a feeling that I was privileged to be getting a lesson from an amazingly gifted teacher. He really understands picture and sound like no other. The early lesson is gold as it explores the sound in Apocalypse Now and links to media that shows the different layers of sounds and how Murch built them layer by layer. That media is in the Real Player format (didn’t even know they still existed!) and you are able to play each layer of sound with picture from the film. This should be required reading for all editors and especially students of sound.
