Mike Jones Digital Basin stumbled upon a nice video series about “how to manage post-production workflow.” This series come via Expert Village and includes 15 videos that mostly run under 2 minutes and is presented by expert Travis Johns. The videos touch on topics from How to Prioritize Post-Production Video Projects to How to Handle Post-Production Client Interactions to When to take Breaks During a Post-Production Project. This little series is probably the most thorough series of “tutorials” (though these aren’t tutorials at all) that I’ve seen about the world of editing and post-production that are more business based and not software based. Most post-production related videos are usually application based with specific tips and how-to information on a particular piece of software. Personally I wouldn’t call these workflow videos so much as How to Manage Your Video Post-Production Business. I think of workflow more as the management of assets from the moment the editor receives the first element of the job and the process of how those assets flow to various departments and entities until the final frame is mastered in online.

Travis intros most of the videos by saying that he’s going to talk to us about a particular subject in our “home video post-production studio.” This sounds like the subject is geared mostly toward the small, independent editor but there’s a lot of good tips in there for the experienced editor as well. I always try to take time to watch videos like these because there’s usually always some tip or trick or idea that I can find useful. After nearly a decade of editing I have very specific ways of organizing projects, dealing with clients and handling problems that work very well but even for an experienced editor it’s important to remember that you might find one little gem that makes your job just a little easier. If you can get past all of the Ads by Google then you just may find something useful. Great find Mike!
