In Culver City yesterday, Sony introduced an easy way to project 3D stereoscopic films, with a single-projector 3D adapter designed to work with its 4K projectors. With the new system, the 4K projector will show stereoscopic images with the full height of the 4K imaging device and can display 2K images for the left and right eye. The adapter attaches to the lens mount of the projector and can be attached and removed very quickly. A Sony spokesperson said it will be available in March 2009.

This is yet more proof that the industry is now regarding 3D stereoscopic films as much more than a niche, but a way to draw audiences back into movie theaters.

The lens units are models LKRL-A002 (X1.1 -1.9) and LKRL-A003 (X1.9 – 3.3), and are designed to meet DCI specifications for 3D digital projection and overcome the bandwidth and resolution limitations of current 3D systems.

When used with Sony’s integrated media block (LMT-200), the SRX-R220 4K projector is able to achieve 4:4:4 RGB signal path from media block, while avoiding the “triple-flash” artifacting of current 3D solutions. It can also deliver a 60P 3D display that is especially effective for sports or other fast-moving content in 3D.
