Director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) has just released “Rakka,” a short science-fiction film starring Sigourney Weaver, using the unusual business model of his new Oats Studios. “Rakka” is available to view for free on YouTube and game-distribution service Steam, but fans can pony up $4.99 to unlock a Steam-based package of videogame-style downloadable content, or DLC. The “Rakka” DLC includes a higher-quality video file with 5.1 surround sound, concept art, scripts, and 3D assets. More content is set to be added, including behind-the-scenes VFX materials, the film’s sound stems, and raw dailies — assets that would allow fans to create their own remixes and/or re-edits of the project.
