Is it fair to single out the Scorpion King’s appearance in The Mummy Returns — a digitized head and torso of The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) connected to the body of a monster scorpion — as the worst VFX shot in history? Hardly. Back in 2001, critics actually praised the film’s VFX, which were complex and unusually ambitious for their time. Still, with digital humans having grown more realistic by leaps and bounds in the intervening years, the shot hasn’t aged well, leaving the Scorpion King stranded on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. And that inspired the team of YouTube-savvy artists at Los Angeles studio Corridor Digital to see if they could improve the effect using contemporary techniques.
