Canon announced the CJ15EX4.3, the newest in its high-end line-up of UHDxs portable broadcast lenses.

The CJ15EX4.3 is a 4.3mm–65mm zoom lens for 2/3-inch camera sensors expected to ship in early 2020 for a price to be determined. Its an f/1.8 lens up to 40mm, and then ramps down to f/2.9 after 65mm, according to Canon Senior Fellow Larry Thorpe.

Thorpe said the lens is HDR-ready, and detailed some of the design characteristics: Canon’s recently developed Air Sphere Coating, which achieves an exceptionally low refractive index to eliminate reflections that can contaminate the deep blacks; a new inner focus system allowing the lens to reach 4.3mm with minimal distortion; a built-in 2x extender allowing the lens to reach 130mm at the long end of its range.

The digital servo has three 20-pin connectors for traditional zoom and focus control, as well as a third controller to convey the required 16-bit information for shooting in virtual studios.

Canon said the lens was first used at the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, IN, where it tracked focus on drag-racers traveling at more than 300 mph, according to an endorsement from NHRA Technology Executive Mike Rokosa, who called its performance “impressive.”
