The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) said today that 32 feature films had been submitted for its consideration in the Animated Feature Film category.
In case there was any doubt, Disney has opted not to enter its all-CG (save one shot) The Lion King remake in this category, hoping instead to score a prized Best Picture nomination. Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film are also considered for other categories, but the studio seems to be sending a message that it wants The Lion King judged alongside live-action features, not animated films. Toy Story 4, on the other hand, was submitted in the animation category.
AMPAS also noted that some of the films have not yet had the seven-day theatrical run in Los Angeles that is required for eligibility. Members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of AMPAS are eligible to vote in the category; others may ask to participate and must meet a minimum viewing requirement in order to vote.
The final five nominees will be announced along with the other nominations on Monday, January 13, 2020.
