Here’s yet another entry into the ever growing list of cheap Final Cut Pro plug-ins. SlickFX is a package that has been available for iMovie for quite some time but now GeeThree has released SlickFX for Final Cut Pro! From the demo movies on the web site SlickFX looks to include your standard page curls and camera flashes, ripples and 3D cubes, old film looks and color funky-ness, text moves and more text moves. They don’t look to be anything revolutionary. There are a slew of these cheap FCP plug-ins out there but for my money if one was planning to buy a lot of the cheap plug-in packages then I would pool the cash and get something like FxFactory. It’s a bit more expensive but you get a lot more effects, transition and generators that are of the highest quality.

So why then would SlickFX be a useful tool for an editor? Well that comes right back down to the price. At $99 SlickFX is dirt cheap and if you just happen to be stuck on an edit where you need a specific, particular, one-of-a-kind transition/filter/generator and SlickFX makes that specific, particular, one-of-a-kind transition/filter/generator then $99 might well be worth the cost to get it. The buy page says that $99 is an introductory price and I don’t know if this package would be worth much more than that … unless there is that specific, particular, one-of-a-kind transition/filter/generator that you need to get a job done. What I didn’t see is a demo for download. It would be nice if they did have a demo to try out. Even though $99 is cheap these filters are still something I would want to try before buying. That is unless I desperately needed that specific, particular, one-of-a-kind transition/filter/generator to get a job done and client out of the suite. Sometimes almost any price is worth paying.
