NewTek said it's giving LightWave 3D a new push, putting NewTek executive Rob Powers at the head of a new division charged with increasing adoption of the company's modeling, animating and rendering tool worldwide.

The company's LightWave 3D Group will target a range of industries including architecture and design along with videogames and feature films. Powers was the leader of development for new features in LightWave over the past two years, NewTek said, working on the virtual preview renderer, anaglyph stereo 3D preview, advanced flocking, instancing, and other improvements in versions 10 and 11. His recent background includes work on Avatar as animation technical director and virtual art department supervisor and on The Adventures of Tintin as virtual art department supervisor.

"Rob's passion for LightWave coupled with his unrivaled film production experience makes him the ideal person to lead the 3D team in new directions," said NewTek President and CEO Jim Plant in a prepared statement.
